New Superintendent to Lead SoCal ROC into the Future
New Superintendent, Dr. Rodriguez, to Lead SoCal ROC into the Future
The Southern California Regional Occupational Center (SoCal ROC) Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the selection of distinguished educator, Dr. Julian A. Rodriguez, as the new Superintendent following unanimous approval of his appointment and employment agreement at the board meeting on May 8th.
Dr. Rodriguez earned his Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree from California State University in Fullerton, culminating in a Doctorate of Education from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. His career in public education spans 21 years as a classroom teacher, site administrator, and district office administrator. Since 2022, Dr. Rodriguez has also served as an Adjunct Professor and curriculum writer for the Riverside Office of Education’s CTE Teacher Credentialing Program.
Dr. Rodriguez’s commitment to high-quality CTE programs was shaped by his own experience as an adult CTE student. “After high school, I enrolled in a Health Services program at my local adult school, choosing a path that would provide me with skills and training I could apply immediately. After ten years in a high-skill, high-wage behavioral health career, I was financially and personally prepared to return to college and complete my undergraduate degree and teacher credentialing without incurring debt. My dedication and passion for this work is very personal and I’m thrilled to join SoCal ROC to continue and expand vital services to the students and districts we serve.”
After making his transition to the Chino Valley Unified School District in 2014, Dr. Rodriguez served as a coordinator, then Director of Assessment and Instructional Technology, before his promotion to Director of Secondary Curriculum and Instruction. During his nine years in CVUSD, he led teams that amassed regional and statewide recognition. To advance work-based learning, Dr. Rodriguez collaborated with the Chamber of Commerce to develop a “menu of services,” providing more than 1,300 students with internships at two dozen local businesses linked to career pathways at the district’s five high schools. A strong communicator, Dr. Rodriguez fosters a deep commitment to collaboration and engagement, bringing an impressive track record of success to this new role. His ability to listen and inspire people are trademarks of his leadership style that will elevate SoCal ROC’s mission to, “through industry-linked programs, provide all students with the skills and knowledge necessary to attain their career goals to become economically self-sufficient and successful contributors to society and a global economy.” “Based on Dr. Rodriguez’s unique and extensive preparation and accomplishments, it was clear to the Board that he is the perfect person to lead SoCal ROC into the future,” noted Board President Rolf Strutzenberg. “His reputation as both a problem solver and collaborator assures that our agency will continue and expand our rich tradition of programs and services. I have no doubt that Dr. Rodriguez will be embraced by students, employees, parents, and the member districts that comprise SoCal ROC.”
Dr. Rodriguez will assume his new position effective July 1, 2023. In the ensuing weeks, Dr. Rodriguez will work closely with the current Superintendent Dr. Atlas Helaire, and the SoCal ROC team to ensure a seamless transition for all involved. The Board would like to extend its appreciation to Dr. Rodriguez and each of the applicants who demonstrated an interest in the position. They also recognize SoCal ROC Cabinet members, employees, students, and community members who provided invaluable input throughout this process. “As we prepare for the opportunities and challenges ahead,” shared President Strutzenberg, “the journey is bright with Dr. Rodriguez at the helm.”
