SoCal ROC Student Owns Dog Grooming Business

The Southern California Regional Occupational Center (SoCal ROC) celebrates the success of one of our former students, Julissa Sperling who took the Pet Health & Grooming course at SoCal ROC during the spring of 2010. Julissa has successfully opened and operated her own grooming business in the city of Torrance. Happy Tails Dog Spa has been in operation for four years. Her business has been acknowledged as Best in Torrance three times and best in The South Bay once.

Julissa stated that she originally studied to be a dentist in Puerto Rico. When she came to the United States, she decided to pursue a different career. That career, of course, was grooming. She found the class as a result of her husband who teaches at North Torrance High School. Some of his students took the Pet Health & Grooming course and told him how much they enjoyed the class. Julissa decided to enroll, and it was one of the best decisions she has made. She stated that the class was dynamic. She was able to catch on very quickly. Her favorite part of the class was the externship where she was able to work with live animals.

After taking the class, Julissa practiced grooming dogs in her garage until she perfected her skills. She then decided to open her own grooming business where she is enjoying much success. Julissa said that the most rewarding part of her job is making the customers satisfied.
